Additional Information
Why We Recommend This
Winter oats are good for grazing and are a great nurse crop when used in a mix. They have an allelopathic effect on weeds and roots can reach more than 6 feet, fighting erosion and compaction.
Things to Watch Out For
Winter oats are less winter hardy and drought tolerant compared to other small grains and require more soil moisture. Manure fertilized oats may have excessive potassium levels for dairy cows to graze. Growth is slower in winter oats than spring.
