Why We Recommend This

Sorghum-Sudangrass is best known for adding organic matter to soils. It is fast growing, smothers weeds, reduces some nematode populations, and will break up compacted soils if mowed once. Sorghum-Sudangrass is good summer forage, is well suited for most of the US, and is drought and heat tolerant. Sorghum-Sudan is Darrin's go-to summer grass species because of its high volume, big root system, and forage potential.

 Things to Watch Out For

Sorghum-Sudangrass can give livestock prussic acid poisoning, especially if plants are young or have been stressed. It is recommended to pull the cattle for 1 week after the killing freeze. Depending on the variety, sorghum-sudan may reseed itself and become a weed issue.
