Additional Information

Why We Recommend This

Rapeseed has dense, fibrous roots that bust compaction and hold soils together to prevent erosion. It produces large amounts of high-quality, protein packed forage and is able to scavenge upwards of 100 lbs of residual N from the soil. Rapeseed is also able to take up insoluble P and make it available to the next crop. Rapeseed is more likely to overwinter than other brassicas, like radishes.

 Things to Watch Out For

Rapeseed's mature plants can be difficult to terminate with herbicides and plants can become weedy if they are allowed to seed. Bio-toxic properties have been observed in decomposing rape; to avoid stunting, biomass should be mostly decomposed before planting.
