Why We Recommend This
Foxtail millet is an excellent forage or smother crop and it produces more biomass than annual rye. It is also one of the most efficient water users, which allows it to thrive in semi-arid climates.
Things to Watch Out For
Foxtail millet does not compete very well against summer annual weeds and does best when planted in a well-prepared, weed free plot. If foxtail millet has been stressed, animals may avoid grazing it due to a heavy concentration of nitrate. If allowed to go to seed, it may become weedy. Be cautious about planting millet near wheat, as it can host wheat curl mite.
